The G.T. Road: Restaurant Review

Being a food lover, I never let go of an opportunity to discover new cuisines, different kind of foods and amazing places with a unique idea behind them. Delhi is filled with restaurants and eateries but there are some places that stand apart from the rest due to their idea or concept behind the gastronomical extravaganza they offer. One such restaurant is The G.T. Road!

The restaurant is located in five cities, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gurugram, Jammu and Jaipur. I went to the Delhi branch located in Connaught Place. The restaurant is inspired by one of the greatest roads in Asia, The G.T. Road giving a gastronomic journey with a sense of history. A journey that traverses a distance of 2600 Kilometers and offers a wide variety of cuisines from Kabul to Chittagong.

A rich geography that witnessed history like no other. A land steeped in traditions, culture, beliefs & rituals. The restaurant is on a mission to bring back the lost recipes of an era gone by, the authentic organic spices & masalas to transport one back in time, using traditional cooking methods & secrets to retain the authentic taste & flavours. They call this journey a visit back to the roots! The G.T. Road is not just a restaurant. It is a walk through history, the taste of which lingers for long.

Concept Behind the Restaurant

The G.T. Road is a 2600 km food journey from Kabul to Chittagong.

In our mad rush into the future, we often jettison the past. Now in the heart of Delhi is a restaurant that revisits the roots and helps you rediscover the magical recipes of an era gone by. Inspired by one of the longest roads in Asia, The G.T. Road is a gastronomic journey. A journey that traverses a distance of 2600 kilometres and offers a wide variety of cuisines from Kabul to Chittagong.

In praise of the Grant Trunk Road, Rudyard Kipling once said "Such a river of life, as nowhere else exists in the world" and a leisurely buffet will convince you that The G.T. Roads is not just a restaurant. Savour the flavours of food eaten by the invaders & travellers, emperors & generals, hermits & traders across the ages.

It is a walk-through history, that taste of which lingers for long.

We use authentic organic spices and masalas to transport you back in time. We use some of the old traditional methods of cooking to retain the taste and flavours which is often missing in today’s food.

My Experience

It was my first time in this restaurant and boy I was mesmerized. It felt like I am walking through the past. The ambience was soothing and relaxing. The lights were not very harsh, the interiors were on point. Using tiffin boxes, luggage bags and utensils from that era, with portraits of British India, everything was just right. The doors, from the main door from where you enter the washroom door, you will feel like you are walking into some other world.

We went during their lunch service, which is from 12 pm to 3.30 pm. Mind you, it was full of people, there was not one seat empty but maybe it was the structure or maybe the people present there, the quite around was really nice. I don't like too much noise when I am enjoying my food and here at The G.T. Road, it was possible. If you are looking for a romantic place for the next date, book your seats here.

Experience with Food

Since it was my first visit and I wanted to try out most of the dishes possible for me over here, I went straight to the buffet. Over here, we were served with a welcome drink with starters or in the style of G.T. Road, Shuruvaat was served by the waiters. I was pleased to see how well dressed all the staff was and how they were talking to every customer with a smile on their face. It was rather a pleasant experience!

I took one small serving of every starter and it was amazing. I especially loved Kandhari Paneer Tikka, Honey Chilly Potatoes, Button Mushrooms, and Mungfali Aloo Tikki. After starters came to Chaat and it was mind-blowing. Papdi chaat and Palak Patta chaat is my favourite. Here is a sneak peek at some of the things I enjoyed!

After this was the turn for the main course. You can see in the menu how many options we had to try!

The entire area was well laid out, giving a feel of some maharaja's kitchen or a lavish old school rasoi with all those heavy utensils and decor. From the dabba tiffins to suitcases, everything was placed in the kitchen, giving it a rustic feel. Food was placed in such a nice manner in those big serving utensils, I don't know what they are called, sorry. You can take as many servings as possible or your heart desires.

Take a look at what all I ate from the main buffet.

There was a huge variety of rotis and naans which were served on demand. You can request hot breads while enjoying the food. Rotis were nicely cooked and soft to eat. They were complimenting well with daal, paneer and saag.

The food in the main course was not as impressive as the starters and sweet dishes that came afterwards. There were garlic fried noodles served with Manchurian gravy which was surprisingly delicious. It was surprising to see these since the restaurant specialises in North Indian food. However, they do mention China Town located in Kolkata as part of the journey, so maybe that's the idea. My favourite from that was sweet juicy Jalebi served with Rabdi, Pinni Laddu, Kesar Ice Cream and Paan Ice cream.

I will advise you to take little quantities while eating so that you can enjoy all the flavors. This way you will have some room in your tummy if something tastes amazing to you from the buffet.

Hope you loved the review.

Lots of Love!!!
XOXO
